JEJU, Oct. 1 (Korea Bizwire)The municipality of the southern resort island of Jeju will introduce a compensation system to promote the use of overproduced and wasted renewable energy for electric vehicle (EV) charging.

The the Jeju provincial government on Thursday signed a business agreement with the state-run energy firm Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) and energy startup GridWiz Inc. to promote using wasted renewable energy for EV charging starting from next month.

The Plus DR project is based on the concept that uses the DR (Demand Response) method, an electricity trading method, in a different format.

After downloading the GridWiz app on a smartphone, EV drivers need to pre-register their membership card number for use in charging.

For instance, the app can issue an advanced notice on the implementation of Plus DR for about two or three hours starting from 1 p.m.

In such a case, EV drivers can charge their vehicles at public charging stations owned by the provincial government during the Plus DR hours.

Through the app, EV drivers can earn Plus DR points. The points can be converted into local currency or used as discount points when charging EVs.
