JEJU, Aug. 1 (Korea Bizwire)The provincial government of the southern island of Jeju has unveiled a plan to establish a large-scale green hydrogen production base construction project.

The provincial government on Monday announced that it was selected by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy to spearhead technology development and a demonstration project for clean hydrogen production.

Green, or clean, hydrogen refers to hydrogen that is produced using electricity generated from renewable energy without emitting carbon.

The project aims to achieve a total annual output of 30 megawatts (MW) at two facilities. One facility will generate 10 MW via alkaline electrolysis, while the other will produce 5 MW using polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis technology.

The electrical output of 30 MW is 10,000 times the 3 kilowatts (kW) that an average household can use as its maximum capacity per hour, which is equivalent to the amount of power needed to sustain a single household for a year.

Following a preliminary feasibility review, the project is scheduled to operate from 2025 to 2030 at the site of Jocheon-eup in Jeju City.

Prior to this initiative, the provincial government launched 3 MW and 12.5 MW green demonstration projects in Gujwa-eup.
