Jeju Island Tops South Korean Rankings for Multicultural Marriages

JEJU, Dec. 16 (Korea Bizwire)Among South Korean cities and regions, Jeju Island ranked first in terms of the share of multicultural marriages last year.

13.2 percent of marriages on the southern resort island last year were multicultural marriages, the highest rate among the nation’s major cities and regions, according to the data released by Statistics Korea.

The share of multicultural marriages refers to the proportion of multicultural marriages as a percentage of total marriages.

The number of marriages conducted on Jeju Island last year totaled 3,405, of which 448 or 13.2 percent were multicultural marriages.

Jeju ranked No. 16 in terms of the overall number of multicultural marriages, but took the top spot when it came to the proportional share.

By nationality of marriage migrants, Vietnamese accounted for 28 percent of Jeju’s multicultural marriages, followed by Chinese Koreans at 21.9 percent, Chinese at 19.3 percent and Filipinos at 9.3 percent.

The number of multicultural divorces stood at 166, accounting for 9.4 percent of total divorce cases.
