JEJU, Oct. 26 (Korea Bizwire) — A smart MICE industrial complex will be built in Jeju Island’s Seogwipo Innovation City.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) announced on Thursday that Jeju Island’s “reputation as an international tourist attraction thanks to convenient traffic, accommodations, and abundant tourist resources make it a perfect spot for MICE.”
MICE is short for meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions.
The plan is to invest 7.8 billion won to build Smart MICE educational facilities and rent-a-car centers equipped with electric vehicle charging stations and solar panels.
Other plans are also in the works, including the creation of a Cooperative-Intelligent Transport System, Jeju Innovation City Multi-innovation Center, sports centers, and urban planning schemes to help prevent crime.
In addition, 22.9 billion won will be set aside for towns near the innovation city to create ideas for tourists using empty buildings, based on the number of visitors, the purpose of visit, and average duration of stay.
Jeju Province, the Jeju Tourism Organization, the Jeju Convention and Visitors Bureau, and other education institutions will form a consultative group for MICE development.
The group will provide comprehensive data on meetings, exhibitions, education, and tourism and provide collaborative workspace services to help find new business models.
MOLIT expects to hold more than 160 international conferences each year through the consultative group.
