JEJU, June 14 (Korea Bizwire) Jeju Island has begun harvesting its signature seasonal delicacy — chotang sweet corn — a favorite summer treat prized for its juicy crunch and natural sweetness.

This year, sweet corn is being cultivated on 190 hectares of farmland across the island, a 10.5 percent decrease from 2024’s 210 hectares.

Once overshadowed by sticky glutinous corn, chotang corn has surged in popularity in recent years, driven by shifting taste trends and growing demand for naturally sweet, low-fat foods.

Low in fat and rich in dietary fiber, sweet corn is also considered beneficial for digestion and weight management. Corn silk, often brewed as tea, is valued for its potassium content and anti-inflammatory properties.

Agricultural experts recommend choosing corn with bright, light green husks that feel slightly moist and springy when pressed — signs of optimal freshness.

Jeju’s warm climate allows the corn to hit the market 15 to 20 days earlier than mainland harvests, making it a sought-after early summer item.

To celebrate the harvest, Jeju City and the Jeju Tourism Organization will co-host the “Susa-ri Sweet Corn Festival” from June 14 to 15 in the coastal village of Aewol, offering visitors a chance to sample this seasonal delicacy at its freshest.
