JEJU, March 9 (Korea Bizwire) — The skeleton of a fin whale, towering up to four stories in height, will reveal itself from the ground after a 14-month wait.
The Folklore and Natural History Museum of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced Monday that it will dig up the bones of a fin whale, temporarily buried near the museum in January of last year, to begin preservation procedures.
The remains of the fin whale, which was 12.6-meter-long and weighed approximately 12 tons, were found near the coast of Jeju Island in December 2019. An autopsy took place at Hallim Port in January of last year.
In the same month following the autopsy, the museum decided to bury the bones behind its research lab in wait for the preservation procedure to begin, including removing fat remaining on the bones.
The museum plans to dig up the bones by the end of this month to send them to a professional preservation agency on the mainland to make a specimen.
The bones will be completely removed of fat and bleached, which is expected to take around 16 to 18 months.
