SEOUL, March 20 (Korea Bizwire) — The Jeju provincial government has announced that it will be introducing a commercial drone delivery service, for the first time in the country, later this year.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology selected 15 cities and provinces for the drone demonstration project.
Jeju will begin a commercial drone delivery service for some 130 homes on Gapado Island, located southwest of the city of Seogwipo. The drones will be in charge of delivering lightweight, non-special items.
The province will set up take-off and landing zones as well as flight routes. It will also establish drone identification and drone safety management systems.
Meanwhile, the city of Seongnam in Gyeonggi Province plans to set up drone delivery points near Jungang Park and the Tancheon Stream, and offer commercial drone delivery service for items purchased at convenience stores in the park.
The city of Incheon plans to adapt large drones capable of carrying up to 100 kilograms to transport equipment needed for rescue missions at sea.
