Joseon Emperor Gojong to Host Foreign Diplomats at Deoksu Palace

SEOUL, Sept. 18 (Korea Bizwire)Onlookers will get a glimpse of the past as the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation announced that on weekends from September 16 to October 22, Deoksu Palace will host the “Empire of Korea Welcoming Ceremony for Foreign Diplomats”.

The event, a reenactment of traditional Joseon-era diplomatic procedures, will take place on the grounds of Jeonggwanheon and Jeuokjodang within the palace.

Emperor Gojong and emissaries from the United States, France and England will discuss as variety of topics such as introducing electric lighting into civilian homes, details regarding the construction of Seokjojeon Hall (a Western-style building designed by British architect G.R. Harding) and the display of the Jikji (full title translated as Anthology of Great Buddhist Priests’ Zen Teachings) at the Exposition Universelle World Fair of 1900 in Paris.

From October 12 through 15, the 120th anniversary of the Empire of Korea’s official declaration, a special commemorative crowning performance will take place at Deoksu Palace.

The welcoming ceremony starts at 2:30 p.m. Visitors are advised that Jeonggwanheon only permits 100 at a time.
