SEOUL, Nov. 12 (Korea Bizwire) — JSR Corp., a Japanese semiconductor materials producer, has started construction of a new production line in South Korea in a move expected to bolster the chip industry’s supply chain, the industry ministry said Tuesday.
The Japanese firm held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility that will produce metal oxide resist, a type of photoresist used in chip production, in Cheongju, 111 kilometers south of Seoul, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
JSR, the world’s leading producer of photoresist, established its first production line in South Korea in 2003 and has been gradually increasing its investment in the country, the ministry added.
The company plans to begin production at the new facility in 2026.
“Through cooperation with North Chungcheong Province and Cheongju, the ministry will provide full support to ensure JSR’s investment is successfully implemented, leading to additional commitments,” Kim Dae-ja, a senior ministry official, said in a statement.
“The government will continue to make policy efforts to help South Korea become a global business hub for cutting-edge industries,” Kim added.
