SEOUL, Dec. 15 (Korea Bizwire)Kakao Pay Corp., the online payment unit of South Korean tech giant Kakao Corp., said it has launched a mobile-based certified mail service that provides proof of originality for e-documents, thus having the same effect as certified mail.

The new service, the first of its kind in the domestic fintech industry, uses the company’s e-document distribution certificate to provide proof of e-document sending, receiving and reading.

By adding a function allowing users to store sent documents to its existing electronic document service, the new service has the same legal effect as certified mail.

Unlike certified mail that requires about one or two days to complete sending, the new service can be completed instantly through messenger app KakaoTalk.

The cost is also significantly lower than that of certified mail. The new service also can contribute to reducing paper use.

Kakao Pay signed a business agreement with state housing developer Korea Land & Housing Corp. (LH) and local companies to expand the mobile originality verification service back in October.
