SEOUL, Jan. 3 (Korea Bizwire) — Kakao Corp. announced plans to introduce Global Signal, a program that blocks messenger phishing, on Wednesday.
The program, once it detects that an unregistered friend has a foreign phone number, will automatically replace the profile picture with a globe icon on an orange background.
Adding or tapping on the chat button with the unregistered friend will display a pop-up window that warns the user of the nationality of the unregistered friend, as well as cautionary advice on unregistered friends.
The new program comes after a surge in reports of phishing cases in which foreign numbers were used to join KakaoTalk and approach other users as fake friends or family members, with the ultimate goal of asking for money.
“The program has been introduced to better prevent phishing,” said a source from Kakao. “We will do our best to protect KakaoTalk users from such threats.”
