KEPCO Apologizes for Massive Power Outage in Ulsan

SEOUL, Dec. 7 (Korea Bizwire)Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) on Thursday issued a public apology over a massive power outage that hit the southeastern industrial city of Ulsan the previous day.

The blackout occurred at around 3:37 p.m. in a southern residential district of Ulsan, about 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, due to a malfunctioning substation, according to the industry ministry and company officials.

The power outage left around 155,000 households without electricity for some two hours.

“We deeply apologize for causing significant inconvenience to the public,” the state-run power company said in a statement.

KEPCO said it will launch an investigation team comprising of internal and outside experts to thoroughly identify the cause and establish preventive measures for the future.

Company officials believe that the outage was caused by an insulation failure of a switchgear inside the substation.
