KEPCO Introduces Monitoring Service to Prevent Solitary Deaths

SEOUL, March 26 (Korea Bizwire)State-run Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) will be introducing a caretaking service for single-person households to prevent solitary deaths.

KEPCO signed a memorandum of understanding with Jeju City and SK Telecom Co. to provide a big data-based social security service on Thursday.

This new service will conduct an artificial intelligence (AI)-based analysis of a household’s electricity usage patterns, and will also factor in communications data to look for any unusual activity at a single-person household, and notify local authorities.

For instance, the new service will be able to detect unusual drops in usage of electricity or absence of phone calls or text messages to quickly anticipate any dangers or risks for a solitary resident.

Based on the agreement, KEPCO and SK Telecom will join hands to collect data on electricity use and communications, and set up an official website.
