KOICA Builds School Food Centers in Nicaragua

SEOUL, May 26 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea has built food centers for free at elementary schools in Nicaragua hurt by a recent hurricane.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) recently finished the construction of food storage, kitchens and other facilities at eight grade schools in Nicaragua’s Jinotega department and held an opening ceremony at El Madroño Elementary School on Tuesday.

The South Korea’s overseas aid agency, jointly with the World Food Programme (WFP), has been providing school food to 170,000 children attending public elementary schools in the Jinotega department and the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region since 2018.

The aim of the school food program is to restore the children’s right to education in Nicaragua as the country struggles with constant hurricanes.

KOICA has purchased some 911 tons of flour, rice, corn and other food materials from local farms in the Central American nation since 2020 to use as food supplies for schools.
