SEOUL, Nov. 19 (Korea Bizwire)A group of 170 owners of Kona Electric model has sued Hyundai Motor Co. for a series of fires accidents that has tarnished the model’s reputation and lowered the vehicle’s overall value.

The group submitted the lawsuit to Seoul Central District Court last week, calling on the company to issue compensation.

“Each person is calling for compensation of 8 million won (US$7,200). They may call for more as the trial commences,” said the law firm in charge of the case.

Kona EV owners are calling for Hyundai to replace the entire battery pack, claiming that the updates in the Battery Management System are not enough to resolve the risk of fire.

Hyundai Motor set up plans to recall some 77,000 Kona EVs worldwide following a series of fires.

In South Korea, the company has been offering recalls since Oct. 16 for battery management system updates. The company replaces the battery only if there are signs of battery failure after the update has been completed.
