SEOUL, Nov. 16 (Korea Bizwire)The next main computer system of Kookmin Bank has been determined as IBM’s mainframe computer. The bank held a board of directors meeting on November 14 to approve a proposal to select the new computing system that has been the focus of a controversy for months.

Kookmin Bank has undertaken a project to replace all its computing system with UNIX system. In the process, KB Financial Group chairman Lim Young-rok and KB Kookmin Bank president Lee Kun-ho clashed over allegations of improper dealings and ended up resigning. It resulted in IBM as the final beneficiary of all the hullabaloo.

The bank has reviewed the issue from the beginning after resignation of Mr. Lim and held two competitive biddings among mainframe and UNIX suppliers.

As all the UNIX suppliers gave up on the bidding, IBM became the final bidder after deliberation by an evaluation committee established by the bank. The current contract between IBM and Kookmin Bank will expire in August next year.
