SEOUL, May 10 (Korea Bizwire)Korea Railroad Corp. (KORAIL), South Korea’s state-owned railway operator, said Tuesday it will begin offering jobs to homeless people living near subway stations in Seoul, Busan, and eight other locations.

KORAIL, in collaboration with local governments and support centers for the homeless, will provide jobs to 100 homeless individuals who have the motivation to become self-sustaining.

These jobs will involve cleaning subway squares and assisting other homeless individuals.

The selected recruits will be responsible for cleaning subway squares for six months, until the end of the year, working three hours a day and 60 hours a month, while receiving a monthly salary.

The railway operator will provide work opportunities and funding for cleaning subway squares, while local authorities will offer housing subsidies and essential goods.

The selection of recruits, program operation, and employment will be facilitated by homeless welfare centers under the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Since its inception in 2012, the program has provided jobs to 933 people over the past 11 years, with 33 percent of them being hired by KORAIL subsidiaries and local authorities.
