SEOUL, May 31 (Korea Bizwire) – Namdaemun, officially known as Sungnyemun, is currently the No.1 treasure of South Korea. It is one of the eight gates of a fortress wall that surrounded Seoul during the Joseon dynasty.

However, for the past 20 years, experts and civic groups have debated over whether to give Hunminjeongeum the designation of the No.1 national treasure.

Hunminjeongeum is a document that describes the entirely new script of the Korean language now known as Hangeul.

A petition was filed Tuesday requesting the reassignment of the No.1 national treasure by various civic organizations, and the debate is now expected to take place in the national assembly.
