Korea Develops ‘Magically Vanishing’ Semiconductor Component

DAEJEON, Oct. 17 (Korea Bizwire) – A research team from Kookmin University has developed an electronic device for semiconductors that can self-dissolve leaving no residue, a technology that would ultimately make Hollywood spy films come to reality. 

This transient electronics research was done using nitrocellulose paper, frequently used by magicians as their ‘magic’ flash papers. 

The team applied semiconducting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the nitrocellulose paper substrate, and stamped the back of the paper with a silver (Ag) resistive heater, which would induce heat when signaled by an electrical current, burning the CNTs.

According to the team, the technology also has the capacity to determine the time it takes for the material to dissolve by controlling the amount of time and the electrical current applied to the heater.

This is the first time that nitrocellulose paper has been used for a transient electronic device. 

“The technology could be applied to a wide variety of uses, from military that requires high security of classified information to medical fields, which use various in-body sensors,” said Dr. Choi Sung-jin, who took part in the research. 

The full research findings were published in the September 26 edition of Nano Research.
