SEOUL, Nov. 30 (Korea Bizwire) – The Korean National Police Agency introduced “Smart Patrol Vehicles” Tuesday, equipped with various information and communications technologies to assist with police operations.

One of the key features of the new vehicles is a “smart multi-camera”, which is installed on the roof. It is comprised of a searchlight, infrared camera, and AVNI (Automatic Vehicle License Plate Recognition System), which reads nearby license plates and sends the data to a control center to see if the vehicle is on any wanted lists.

The camera is fully operational at both high speed and at night.

Other features include a “lift light bar”, also on the roof, that allows officers to display different words from inside the vehicle depending on the situation, and a “smart lock” allowing officers to remotely lock their running car while out of the vehicle.

Ten smart police vehicles will be put into use in December for a pilot project in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon, with the KNPA planning to introduce more units in the future.
