SEOUL, July 11 (Korea Bizwire) – A team of scientists from KIST (the Korea Institute of Science and Technology) has revealed prototype components of a new device that might ultimately be used to develop a contact lens-like diabetes sensor that would use teardrops to diagnose diabetes.
The final product will measure the glucose concentration in tears to determine if an individual is diabetic. Four prototypes, which will function as essential components of the final product, were revealed on Sunday.
The first of the prototypes has the ability to capture approximately 7 ㎕ of tears in 15 seconds via a microscopic pipe-like structure. Next is a sensor that can detect minute amount of glucose in the tears with a sensitivity of 110㎂/mM·cm², followed by a secondary thin-film battery with 25㎂h/cm²·㎛capacity, which will provide power to the lens.
The last of the prototypes was a test chip (4x4mm) dedicated to the overall operation of the lens and communication with an external module. The team plans to ultimately reduce the size of the chip to 1x1mm.
The complete device is expected to be completed in approximately two years.
The prototypes will be presented at 2016 Nano Korea, which will take place at KINTEX from July 13 to July 15.
