Korean Adolescents Open to Non-Marital Relationships and Parenting

SEOUL, May 2 (Korea Bizwire)More than half of Korean adolescents are willing to live with their future partner without getting married to them, while 6 of 10 adolescents are distraught over various issues in their lives, especially about their studies, according to a survey conducted by Statistics Korea and the Ministry of Gender Equality & Family (MOGEF) that was published on April 28.

Among the surveyed adolescents in 2014, 74.2 percent answered that they would be willing to marry a foreigner, and 26.4 percent said they would consider having children outside of marriage.

On the topic of stressful life issues, 61.4 percent said they are distraught, while 54.4 percent and 34.4 percent said they are stressed over school life and home life respectively, and 35.5 percent and 25.6 percent of distraught adolescents said they are concerned about their studies and their jobs respectively.

Only 4.6 percent said they have no worries. When asked about whom they talk about their worries with, 46.2 percent and 26 percent answered their friends & peers and their families respectively, while they were 5.8 times more likely to consult their mother than their father.

Korean adolescents were also increasingly participating in arts and culture activities such as traveling, career experiences and policy making activities in 2014.

The average adolescent used the Internet for 2 or 3 hours every day, and 46.9 percent of adolescents thought that they do not feel they are safe, due to crime, war threats from North Korea, and disasters.
