SEOUL, Feb. 5 (Korea Bizwire) – The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH) was donated a lifetime collection of 2,000 rare insect specimens by Hong Seung-pyo, a Korean entomologist, on February 4.

The collection features a specimen of a titan beetle, the biggest species among beetles. Hong’s specimen is 11.4 centimeters long, which makes it the biggest ever titan beetle on record in Korea. Hong also donated the biggest collection of Callipogon relictus, or longhorn beetle, in Korea. Hong’s 10 specimens of Callipogon relictus are a great addition to the Korean entomology resource pool since the beetles are extremely rare. One of the specimens even goes back more than 46 years.

The NRICH is planning to hold an exhibition of donated specimens, honoring Hong’s wish to share his collection with the public.
