SEOUL, Mar. 12 (Korea Bizwire) — Yu Gwan-sun, the South Korean independence fighter responsible for organizing the March 1 Independence Movement against Japanese colonial rule, was added to the Russian version of Wikipedia last Friday.
The entry contained detailed information about the national hero, including her life as an independence activist, her trials, and her final moments in imprisonment.
Jung Kyung-joo, a senior student of Russian Literature at Pusan National University, created the Wikipedia page for Yu Gwan-sun, as she worked as one of the ‘youth ambassadors’ in a public diplomacy program led by the Voluntary Agency Network of Korea (VANK) and Yonhap News Agency.
“As soon as I found out that there was no information about Yu Gwan-sun on Wikipedia’s Russian edition, I decided to create a post about her,” said Jung.
“It’s my pleasure to be able to put my language abilities towards promoting Yu Gwan-sun’s life.”
Wikipedia, by default, allows anyone to create or edit any post. What has been posted, however, is subject to review by Wikipedia to determine whether it should be maintained or taken down.
Since Yu Gwan-sun’s life is a non-political issue, the post is expected to be maintained.
“More than 300 million people worldwide speak Russian either as their primary or secondary language, and that is why this is a meaningful achievement in letting the world know about Yu Gwan-sun,” said Park Ki-tae, head of the VANK.
