SEOUL, Dec. 16 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea has created a national standard for a sound-making OLED display speaker.
The Korea Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) announced that it listed two types of sound performance measuring methods for the display speaker that can be used for TVs and smartphones, as a Korean Industrial Standard (KS), adding that it will promote their international standardization.
A display speaker refers to a display that generates sound itself without a separate speaker. The display speaker replaces the role that the vibrator of regular speaker plays.
If this technology is used for TVs, it eliminates the need to have separate internal speaker space, thereby enabling thinner design. It also enables a dimensional sound effect without an external speaker.
In particular, since sound is delivered to viewers from the direction that they’re looking, the new technology helps viewers feel like that the characters on screen are talking directly to them.
If this technology is applied to smartphones, it enables an innovative design without a speaker hole. The speaker display delivers sound using bone-conducted vibration, thereby promising clearer phone calls.
The KATS started the development of standards from last year as a way to support the commercialization of display speaker technology.
The national standard was enacted in collaboration with LG Display Co. and Samsung Display Co., South Korea’s two major display makers, and the Korea Testing Certification Institute.
