SEOUL, Feb. 22 (Korea Bizwire)A Korean-made vegetable protein product is gaining popularity among Japanese men.

South Korean food producer Pulmuone Co. said the cumulative sales of its tofu-based snack bar Tofu Bar topped the 10 million unit mark one year after being released in Japan.

The company achieved such a milestone despite the fact that the product is selling exclusively through the 7-Eleven convenience store chain.

Pulmuone’s Japanese branch Asahico focused on ‘high protein’ and ‘convenience’ as key selling points.

Tofu Bar contains about 14.7 grams of protein per 100 grams, about 2.7 times higher than the amount of protein contained in Japan’s Kinugoshi tofu.

Another factor behind the success of the product is its easy-to-eat bar type shape.

“Many Japanese men from their 30s to 50s enjoy tofu bars as an alternative to breakfast or as a way to consume protein after exercise,” a Pulmuone official said.

The popularity of Tofu Bar is expected to accelerate further since Asahico ramped up production lines at two production plants in Japan, doubling its production capacity.
