SEOUL, March 9 (Korea Bizwire)A Korean research team has synthesized a new multifunctional 2D ordered crystal structure, designated as C2N-h2D crystal, that exhibits more enhanced electrical features than those of graphene. The new crystal can be applied in diverse areas that are not suitable for graphene, such as energy storage, catalysis and life sciences.

A research team led by Professor Baek Jong-beom at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) has published the results of its success in synthesizing the thinnest-layered micrometre-sized 2D crystal, the result of a reaction between hexaaminobenzene trihydrochloride and hexaketocyclohexane octahydrate, in the March 6 issue of Nature Communications.

The crystal exhibits a strong semiconducting nature, as it has a large Ion/Ioff ratio that equals a fast switching speed for semiconducting devices. The Ion/Ioff ratio of the C2N-h2D crystal was confirmed to be 100 times more efficient than current silicone semiconductors in production.

According to the team’s paper, the unique structure and the simple and efficient synthesis of the C2N-h2D crystals may enable its use in applications where graphene has proven to be unsuitable.
