BUSAN, Sept. 11 (Korea Bizwire) — Two affiliates of HD Hyundai have received approval in principle for an Internet of Things–based smart cabin system designed to optimize energy use and improve onboard living conditions, the Korean Register (KR) said Wednesday.
The certification, granted jointly to HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, verifies the design’s feasibility and marks a critical step toward commercialization.
The smart cabin uses IoT sensors to integrate management of heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting, while monitoring energy consumption in real time to improve efficiency.
KR said it confirmed that the system can maintain and restore a vessel’s core functions even in the event of cyberattacks or system failures.
The approval was formally awarded on Tuesday at the Gastech exhibition in Milan, one of the maritime industry’s leading global events.
“This approval is the first step toward realizing a cabin system tailored for the smart-ship era,” said Shim Hak-moo, executive vice president at HD Hyundai Samho. “We will continue to develop next-generation smart solutions to lead the global shipbuilding industry.”
