Korean Traditional Hand-made Paper ‘Hanji’ Goes Global

JEONJU, Dec. 8 (Korea Bizwire)The Jeonju city government in North Jeolla Province has partnered with the Central Institute for Restoration and Conservation of Archival and Library Heritage (ICPAL) in Rome, paving the way for the globalization of Korean traditional handmade paper known as ‘hanji.’

It was announced on Monday that Jeonju had signed an agreement with the ICPAL to jointly promote the development of traditional paper for the restoration and conservation of cultural assets.

Under terms of the agreement, the Jeonju city government plans to promote the superiority, durability and tradition of Jeonju hanji in the global cultural property market, which would contribute to expanding awareness of the traditional Korean paper.

Prior to this agreement, it acquired a certificate of recognition from the ICPAL in August, proving that the Jeonju hanji is an ideal material for the restoration and conservation of cultural properties.
