SEOUL, Sept. 6 (Korea Bizwire) — The Korean Register of Shipping (KR), South Korea’s ship quality assurance and risk management company, said Monday it had signed an agreement with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Avikus and the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR) to carry out a joint study on the application and approval of an autonomous ship navigation and maneuvering system.
The agreement was made to bring forward the commercialization of the autonomous ship navigation and maneuvering system as well as to create a dominant presence in the market.
The joint study is aimed at installing Avikus’s Level 2 autonomous navigation solution called HiNAS 2.0 on the ships registered by the LISCR by July 2023.
Based on augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, HiNAS 2.0 integrates information provided by a variety of navigation equipment and sensors to offer guidance on sailing routes as well as to enable ships to avoid collisions.
The system can contribute to reducing the fatigue of sailors, ensuring safe ship operations and enhancing fuel efficiency.
