SEOUL, Aug. 27 (Korea Bizwire) — KT Corp. announced Tuesday that it has begun testing artificial intelligence–based radio access network (AI-RAN) technology on its commercial 5G network, making it the first company in South Korea to do so.

AI-RAN is seen as a cornerstone of future sixth-generation wireless systems. By analyzing traffic data in real time between base stations and network servers, the technology can optimize connections, reduce latency and improve overall capacity.

KT’s initial rollout focuses on two machine learning–driven features: channel estimation, which uses AI to learn complex radio wave patterns and minimize data loss, and multi-user MIMO, which enables base stations to send data simultaneously to multiple users on the same frequency and time resource. Together, the functions allow for greater throughput, more stable connections and faster service for customers.

The pilot is being conducted in Naju, South Jeolla Province, using Nokia’s latest 5G base stations equipped with dedicated AI processors. KT said it plans to expand the trials into commercial services across more regions after reviewing the results.

“AI-RAN not only enhances the customer experience today but is also an essential technology for the 6G era,” said Kwon Hye-jin, head of KT’s network strategy division. “By being the first to verify and adopt AI-RAN in commercial networks, KT will continue to lead network innovation and strengthen its technological leadership.”
