SEOUL, Sept. 7 (Korea Bizwire) — KT Corp., a South Korean telecom giant, announced that it would launch a pilot project for an artificial intelligence (AI)-based smart parking control system in the Russian border town of Vladivostok, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion by improving parking efficiency.
As part of the pilot project, KT will be responsible for supplying an intelligent traffic control system, while Korean electronics firm SiliconCube Co. will be in charge of developing a parking-specific AI solution.
The smart parking control system will be operated by collecting information about vehicle entry and exit to/from the parking lot, and monitoring the status of parking spaces by applying both AI-based number recognition technology and vehicle-sensing technology at a parking lot near the Zolotoy Bridge.
The system is expected to contribute to alleviating traffic congestion in urban areas caused by the vehicles waiting to enter or exit parking lots.
SiliconCube estimated that if the smart control system is applied to the entire city, it would contribute to improving the overall vehicle traffic flow by more than 25 percent.
By providing information on parking spaces to drivers through LED screens, the system would also bring more convenience to citizens making use of parking lots.
