SEOUL, Jan. 2 (Korea Bizwire) — President Lee Jae Myung plans to discuss practical economic cooperation and peace efforts on the Korean Peninsula in his upcoming summit talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping next week, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said Friday.
Lee is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on Sunday, hold a summit with Xi on Monday, and then travel to Shanghai on Tuesday for a two-day stay, during which he will visit the historic site that once served as the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea during Japan’s colonial rule.
The two leaders are expected to discuss practical cooperation in areas such as supply-chain investments, the digital economy, the environment and climate change, people-to-people exchanges, tourism and responses to transnational crimes, Wi told reporters.
North Korea is also expected to be a main agenda item as Seoul seeks to build momentum to resume dialogue with Pyongyang in light of Lee’s state visit to China.
Wi said that Lee will ask China to play a “constructive” role in creating “a breakthrough in resolving issues on the Korean Peninsula.”
Asked about South Korea’s stance on Taiwan issues, Wi said, “We respect the one-China policy and act in accordance with that position.”
Lee’s upcoming visit comes amid heightened tensions around the Taiwan Strait after Beijing conducted large-scale military drills near the self-ruled island earlier this week.
