LEGO Exhibition Showcases Korea’s Rich Cultural Heritage in Toy Blocks

SEOUL, Oct. 6 (Korea Bizwire) – An exhibition is now open for people of all ages, showcasing Korea’s traditional culture using LEGO blocks. The exhibition is happening at Moryham Exhibition in Jung-gu, Seoul, and it’s the first solo exhibition by the artist Colin Jin. He’s known for creating various artworks using LEGO blocks and has been doing this since his mid-20s.

Colin Jin’s art focuses on Korea’s history and traditions. One of the highlights of the exhibition is a depiction of Jongmyo Jeryeak, which is a mix of music, dance, and song performed during rituals at Jongmyo, the tomb of the kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty (a period in Korean history from 1392 to 1910).

Jongmyo Jeryeak includes instrumental music (ak), singing (ga), and dancing (mu), and it’s an important part of Korea’s cultural heritage.

What makes this exhibition unique is that it’s the first time that Jongmyo Jeryeak, a nationally treasured cultural tradition recognized by UNESCO, has been recreated using toy blocks. The artist didn’t use specially made blocks; instead, he crafted each piece by hand over 18 months, without any instructions.

In addition to the Jongmyo Jeryeak display, the exhibition features more than 300 other works, such as dragon-faced tiles discovered at the Sacheonwangsa Temple ruins in Gyeongju and various Korean masks.
