CHUNCHEON, March 11 (Korea Bizwire)The construction of Legoland Korea on a river island in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province scheduled for grand opening early next year, is struggling with development projects in the surrounding area.

Legoland Korea Resort will consist of seven clusters built on 280,790 square meters of land, including the Lego Hotel and a water park.

The official timetable aims to complete construction by the end of June, beginning safety checks before the grand opening.

Aside from Legoland, however, plans to build a convention center, private hotels and resorts in neighboring areas have yet to be confirmed.

Plans to build the Gangwon International Convention and Exhibition Center are being obstructed by the ongoing pandemic and oversaturation of the MICE industry.

A 40-story private hotel planned for construction near the theme park is also expecting delays due to archaeological investigation by the Cultural Heritage Administration which will continue until late June.

The construction project may be scrapped if artifacts are found in large quantities.

“Gangwon Province held three ceremonies to begin construction of the theme park, and delayed the park’s grand opening seven times already in the last 10 years. Nothing has gone right at all,” the Kangwon Peace and Economy Institute said.
