Less Than 30 pct of S. Koreans Eat Sufficient Fruits and Vegetables: Data

SEOUL, Jan. 26 (Korea Bizwire)Less than 3 out of 10 South Koreans eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables every day, a public health agency said.

According to statistics from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency based on the 2021 national health nutrition survey, 25.5 percent of Koreans over 6 years of age eat more than 500 grams of fruits and vegetables a day.

Even among Korean adults over 19 years of age, the share of those who eat more than the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables stood at 28.1 percent.

The ratio of those who eat more than 500 grams of fruits and vegetables a day has been on a downward trend after hitting 38.6 percent in 2015.

By gender, the share of those who eat a sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables was higher for men (27.9 percent) than for women (23 percent).

By age, the rate stood at 12.5 percent for individuals between the ages of 6 and 9, 15.4 percent for those between 10 and 18, and 12.5 percent for those between 19 and 29.

In the 2012 survey, the daily vegetable and fruit consumption of the population older than 1 stood at 283.9 grams and 172.3 grams, respectively. Such figures, however, slid to 248.8 grams and 116 grams, respectively, in 2021.
