SEOUL, Sept. 13 (Korea Bizwire)A vehicle with basic Level 3 self-driving technology will make its first appearance in South Korea in the fourth quarter of this year.

Genesis, the luxury brand of Hyundai Motor Co., said it will introduce its Level 3 Highway Driving Pilot (HDP) system on the all-new G90 sedan up for release later this year.

The system enables autonomous driving on highways up to speeds of 60 kilometers per hour.

It automatically detects traffic lights and traffic flow to maintain distance between cars and stay in a lane.

The driver may take control of the vehicle in case of a system failure or other emergency situations.

Currently, Level 3 autonomous driving technology like HDP is available on a few models, including Mercedes-Benz and Honda Motor.

There are five levels of driving automation defined by the U.S. Society of Automotive Engineers International.

A Level 3 car, if fully developed, will allow lane changes and other autonomous driving functions to work without intervention by the driver.

Kia also plans to introduce HDP on its flagship EV9 sport utility vehicle, which is scheduled to be released in April next year. The speed limit associated with the EV9’s HDP will be raised to 80 kilometers per hour.
