SEOUL, Oct. 27 (Korea Bizwire) – LG Electronics demonstrated its proprietary Soft V2X traffic safety solution at the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) conference in Berlin from October 21-24, showcasing technology aimed at advancing future mobility solutions.
The company, a founding member of 5GAA alongside industry leaders like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, General Motors, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, Commsignia, and Bosch, conducted live demonstrations of its cloud-based Soft V2X system on Berlin’s streets.
The Soft V2X technology, independently developed by LG, anonymously collects and analyzes data about pedestrians’ and vehicles’ location, direction, and speed. This information is shared in real-time between vehicles and pedestrians to predict and warn users of potential dangers.
The system can be integrated into autonomous vehicles and delivery robots through embedded software.
Conference attendees experienced the technology firsthand along a 5.6-kilometer test route in Berlin, with participants praising the solution’s effectiveness and sophistication. The system notably complies with European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) V2X standards.
During the conference, LG Research Fellow Kim Hakseong from the company’s CTO Division presented on “Steps Forward for V2X Evolution,” while the company explored additional business opportunities with 5GAA members and automotive industry representatives.
LG has already implemented pilot programs in several South Korean cities, including Seoul, Gangneung, Sejong, and recently, Songdo in Incheon. The results have been promising. In Sejong, over a six-month period, the system detected 1,143 dangerous situations, with 80.1% of users responding to warnings by changing direction or reducing speed.
Similar positive response rates were recorded in Seoul at 73.1% and Gangneung at 83%. The company reported that the average exposure time to accident risks decreased significantly from 3.03 to 1.93 seconds.
The company plans to advance its Soft V2X and Smart Roadside Unit (RSU) technologies while leading the market in hybrid V2X solutions. The hybrid V2X system integrates short-range dedicated communication networks with long-range mobile networks, representing the next generation of V2X solutions with improved service accessibility and technical efficiency.
