SEOUL, June 26 (Korea Bizwire) — LG Electronics is set to launch a pilot project to evaluate the commercial viability of “Mineral Wash,” a functional glass powder that could replace surfactants in laundry detergents—offering a low-carbon, water-saving alternative for eco-conscious consumers and businesses.
On Thursday, the company announced it would sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Water Industry Cluster and the Korea Water Forum at the Global Business Center in Daegu. The agreement outlines a joint effort to measure the water and electricity savings, cleansing performance, and environmental impact of using Mineral Wash in laundry applications.
Developed by LG, Mineral Wash is a water-soluble glass powder that releases alkaline mineral ions when in contact with water. These ions help break down contaminants on fabrics and reduce the surface tension of water, improving detergent performance while minimizing the need for multiple rinse cycles.
The initiative will test washing results, residue levels, and potential human or environmental risks, comparing the new technology with traditional detergents. LG previously confirmed its safety through tests by the Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL).
If successful, LG expects Mineral Wash to expand its footprint in the laundry detergent ingredient market, including both household and commercial applications. The company has already filed 420 patents related to the material and constructed a production facility capable of producing 4,500 tons annually at its Smart Park in Changwon.
“This pilot project marks a key step in our efforts to establish functional materials like Mineral Wash as a new pillar of our B2B business,” said Baek Seung-tae, Executive Vice President of LG’s Kitchen Solutions Division.
