LG Electronics to Abandon Its “Optimus” Brand in Favor of “G2”

SEOUL, July 19 (Korea Bizwire) – LG Electronics decided to take the “Optimus” name out of its high-priced premium smartphone models. Used for more than three years since the launch of the “Optimus Q” smartphone in May 2010, the Optimus brand will be relegated to low- and medium-priced models.

LG Electronics announced on July 18 that it set the name of the follow-up model of its Optimus G Series as “LG G2″ that will be released on August 7 in New York. Thanks to the strong sales of its previous premium smartphone models Optimus G and Optimus Pro, LG Electronics has become a No.3 player in the global smartphone market.

An LG official said, “Our new brand policy is part of our efforts to make a bigger leap forward in the global marketplace, thereby changing the paradigm in the global smartphone market.”

In a situation where the company broke the record of 10-million smartphones sold in the first quarter of this year, it remains to be seen whether the company’s new brand “G2″ can continue its rally. Some industry analysts are pessimistic that the G2 may not satisfy market expectations just like Samsung’s Galaxy S4 or Apple’s iPhone 5.
