SEOUL, March 19 (Korea Bizwire) LG Electronics, South Korea’s second-largest smartphone maker, said Thursday it will start selling its latest character smartphone in neighboring countries this week, before gradually expanding to the Middle East.

The Aka phone comes with four different, detachable casings that each has its own personality, shown in digital eyes placed on the top of the front cover that peek out from the metal sleeve enveloping three-fourths of the body.

Since it debuted on the home turf in November, the Aka series has been one of LG’s latest creations that were designed to woo the younger generation by offering a way of connecting to a smartphone through an emotive interaction.

Affectionate Eggy, a character in the yellow casing, will show his pupils with ripples if the phone vibrates on a call. It turns from green to red when it is low on power.

They will hit local shelves starting Friday in China and Taiwan, followed by Singapore and Turkey, LG Electronics said in a statement, without giving an exact price for the handset. In South Korea, it has been sold for 399,300 won (US$359), with each character cover available at 30,000 won.

LG said the overseas versions will have a few added features for the characters, such as the ability to put eyebrows or glasses on them. Beginning next month, the Aka phones will be upgraded with Android Lollipop, starting in Seoul and Beijing.

The 5.4-inch handset is built with mid-range components, running on a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor and has an 8-megapixel rear and a 2.1-megapixel front camera with a 16GB internal storage.

The other three characters are short-tempered Wooky in white, music-loving introvert Soul in navy and pink greedy Yoyo.
