SEOUL, June 5 (Korea Bizwire)LG Uplus said on June 4 that it has succeeded in the pilot service of LTE Advanced three-band carrier aggregation, the service four times faster than the regular LTE service. The company unveiled LTE-A technology that enables the aggregation of three component carriers using three different bandwidth sizes, 2.6 GHz, 800 MHz, and 2.1 GHz, to offer speeds of up to 300 Mbps.

This is a meaningful milestone given it was implemented on the network currently in use by actual customers, instead of the controlled lab environment. With the success of the pilot test, LG Uplus will be able to offer faster LTE services than its rivals in areas where broadband LTE services are available. Once a smartphone model capable of supporting the three-band carrier aggregation technology is out, the company will provide the service immediately.

The main reason LG Uplus could offer the technology earlier than any other mobile service operators has to do with the fact that it holds the largest number of 80-MHz LTE bandwidths. Although it takes at least one year to develop and commercialize the three-band carrier aggregation technology, LG Uplus could shorten the development time to six months by continuous R&D effort.

Choi Taek-jin, LG Uplus’ SD Division head in charge of technology strategy, said, “The successful completion of the pilot run is proof of our prowess in next-generation network capabilities. Thanks to our effort in three-band carrier aggregation, we won an award in the wireless network innovation category in the GTB [Global Telecoms Business] Innovation Awards 2014 held in London last month.”

LG Uplus Corp. is a South Korean telecommunications and mobile phone operator controlled by the LG Group, one of the country’s largest chaebol. It was formerly known as LG Telecom.
