SEOUL, March 25 (Korea Bizwire) South Korea’s No. 3 mobile carrier, LG Uplus, said Wednesday it has launched a smart-car management system that runs on the long-term evolution (LTE) network, providing users with real-time information related to their automobiles to ensure safer driving.

Dubbed Telematics in Athena (TiA), the service allows users to check a variety of car-related information on their smartphones, including fuel consumption, car-battery status, and possible malfunctions for better car maintenance. It also informs drivers when to replace parts that need to be changed regularly.

The global positioning system (GPS) also makes it easier for users to locate their cars in parking lots, and to prevent theft as well, the company said.

LG Uplus added it will first target Volkswagen cars sold in South Korea that are distributed by Autoplatz, one of the official local dealers of the German carmaker, and gradually expand the scope to other brands as well.

South Korean tech players have been making moves to tap the smart car industry in recent years. The government also said Tuesday it will spend 28.2 billion won (US$25.5 million) this year to foster the domestic market for smart cars.
