Loneliness, Economic Power Top List of Worries for Men, Women Living Alone

SEOUL, Jun. 24 (Korea Bizwire)While men living alone cited “loneliness” as their biggest concern, women were more concerned about maintaining economic strength and safety.

The KB Financial Group’s research institute said Sunday that men in their 30s to 50s cited loneliness as the biggest concern during a survey of 2,000 single-person households aged 25 to 59.

Women in their 20s to 50s cited economic power as their main concern. The report also showed that “safety” concerns were ranked third and fourth, making it a more significant worry than for men.

While more than 20 percent of men said they had no safety concerns, women in their 20s to 40s had less concern regarding safety.

The report said that a considerable number of women living alone felt safety issues.

Reflecting the single-person household trend common among both men and women, the main issues were centered on housing and living environment and safety and risk factors.

When asked how they responded to living alone (multiple responses), 44.9 percent of men and 52.9 percent of women said they searched on portal sites.

The respondents cited “free living and decision-making”, accounting for 82.5 percent and “leisure activity for one”, accounting for 73.4 percent as the advantages of single-person life.

A total of 72.7 percent said they do not return home immediately after work during weekdays.

The survey also revealed that respondents, on average, did not return home right away after work on 1.92 days during the work week.
