SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Korea Bizwire) — Lotte Chemical Co., a petrochemical unit of Lotte Group, said Monday that it had developed an eco-friendly packaging material by recycling waste plastic, and had started making use of it for the packaging of its products.
The company developed post-consumer recycled polyethylene (PCR-PE) by collecting waste packaging materials made of polyethylene from customers and recycling them.
The newly-developed PCR-EP will be used for the production of the company’s eco-friendly packaging materials at a proportion of about 30 percent.
Lotte Chemical said that it made R&D efforts from early this year to recycle the wasted polyethylene packaging materials and succeeded in developing the eco-friendly packaging material thanks to cooperation with customers.
On a trial basis, the company is using the eco-friendly packaging material for about 3,000 tons of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) products that are produced at its plant in Yeosu on a monthly basis.
The company plans to increase the volume to 15,000 tons per month by the end of this year.
“The introduction of the PCR-PE will contribute to recycling more than 300 tons of plastics per year,” said Hwang Jin-koo, head of Lotte Chemical’s basic material business.
