Majority of 20s, 30s Have Positive Views Toward Alternative Meat

SEOUL, Feb. 4 (Korea Bizwire)More than 2 in 3 people in their 20s and 30s have positive views about alternative meat, a survey showed Thursday.

Shinsegae Food Inc., the food unit of South Korean retail giant Shinsegae, conducted a survey of 1,000 people aged 20 to 39, 67.6 percent of whom felt positive about meat replacements.

Among the respondents, 14.6 percent showed no intention of consuming substitute meat, 14 percent were indecisive, and 3.8 percent thought it was an absurd idea.

As for the reasons why they consumed alternative meat, 71.4 percent pointed to environmental concerns, followed by animal welfare (53 percent), healthy diet (43.5 percent) and preparing for a food crisis (36.5 percent).

More than 40 percent had tried alternative meat in the past. Among those who had yet to try alternative meat, 78.2 percent said they were willing to try out meat replacements.

Asked about the type of alternative meat they had tried, 40.6 percent said they had eaten alternative meat used to replace ham in a sandwich or a salad, followed by beef replacements used as burger patties (34.5 percent).

Among those who tried alternative meat products in the past and had no intention to buy them in the future, 72.3 percent said they did not like the taste.
