SEOUL, Feb. 15 (Korea Bizwire) – Police have arrested a man in his twenties for having abused a cat with boiling water and posting a video of the abuse on the Internet.
Law enforcement officials from Seoul’s Bangbae district revealed on February 14 that the perpetrator identified only as A, age 25, was arrested on February 9 and booked without detention on charges of violating the Animal Protection Act.
The Animal Protection Act mandates jail time not exceeding one year and fines of up to 10 million won in instances of animal abuse, and fines of up to 3 million won for posts of animal abuse made on the Internet.
“I abused the cat because I was angry when I saw a stray cat caught in a trap I set to capture animals to eat the chicken I’m raising. And I filmed a video of it to show it to my friends,” the accused revealed in testimony to police officers.
The video of the cat being abused triggered an outpouring of rage and criticism over the Lunar New Year holidays.
The animal welfare organization Care petitioned the police in Bangbae district early this month, and offered a reward of 5 million won for any information leading to the arrest of the cat abuser.
The police are planning to forward the case to the prosecution, and support the indictment of A as he has admitted to the crime and enough pertinent evidence has been secured.
