SEOUL, Jan. 2 (Korea Bizwire) – A recent study has revealed that men constitute a staggering 80% of the user base of dating applications in South Korea. According to data from WiseApp, a service that analyzes app and retail trends, as of the end of December, the most installed dating apps in the country were Tinder (420,000 users), Wippy (330,000 users), and GLAM (280,000 users), in that order.
The study further highlighted a significant gender disparity among users of these popular dating apps, with a male-to-female ratio of approximately 8:2. However, it was found that female users spend considerably more time on these apps than their male counterparts, with women averaging 3 hours and 56 minutes per month, nearly double the 2 hours spent by men.
The usage varied across age groups, with those in their 20s using the apps for an average of 2 hours and 49 minutes, followed by those in their 40s (2 hours and 23 minutes) and 30s (1 hour and 58 minutes), notably with the 40s age group spending more time on these apps than those in their 30s.
Interestingly, the study also revealed that most users tend to stick to one app, with at least 63% of the users on major dating apps not using any other dating service.
WiseApp warned of the potential rise in ‘romance scams’ – fraudulent activities where individuals are deceived into believing they are in a romantic relationship, often leading to financial exploitation – due to the increasing popularity and diversity of dating apps.
In a related incident in June, a man in his 20s was fined 5 million won for impersonating a woman and defrauding men on a dating app. He was discovered to have used photos of women found on the internet as his profile pictures, deceiving men into believing they were interacting with the women in the photos.
