SEOUL, Nov. 8 (Korea Bizwire)Markus Schaefer, the head of production planning at Mercedes-Benz, predicted that South Korea is on the path to becoming a “hot spot” for future car-related fields such as telematics, navigation systems, and connected cars, adding that the German automaker would be working closely with the nation in these key areas.

Schaefer spoke with journalists after a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Seoul Square that commemorated the expansion of Mercedes-Benz Korea’s R&D Center.

The research center first opened its doors in Korea in 2014, staffed by four researchers and one technician professional. By the end of this year, more than 40 employees will be employed at the research center.

Schaefer stressed that the Mercedes-Benz Research Center will not be limiting its scope to include just South Korea, but that it will be taking on a larger role as a hub of all the company’s research centers in Asia.

Schaefer emphasized that the German carmaker was in the process of developing its future vision best outlined by the acronym “CASE” via its R&D hub in Seoul.

CASE stands for Connected, Autonomous, Shared and Services, and Electric which are at the core of Mercedes-Benz’s business operations.
