SEOUL, Sept. 13 (Korea Bizwire)An AI-based surgery assistant jointly developed by liposuction hospital 365mc and Microsoft Korea and christened M.A.I.L. System (Motion Capture and Artificial Intelligence assisted Liposuction System) was officially unveiled on September 12. 

As its name suggests, the system uses motion capture technology to record surgical procedures and stores them in its database. The footage is then analyzed by the system to separate the best surgical practices from the worst, essentially creating a library of “good” and “bad” examples.

So far, data from 12,000 liposuction surgeries and the diagnosis of 400 obesity cases have been uploaded to Microsoft’s Azure cloud server.

Prior to the development of the technology, liposuction surgeries were well-known for their unpredictable nature; the result and the health and safety of the patient were heavily reliant on the skill, or the ‘touch’ of the surgeon.

As the insertion of the surgical needle can cause hemorrhages and skin necrosis if not placed into the skin correctly, a poorly conducted surgery can cause long-term damages to the patient.

This is where M.A.I.L. comes in. The system will “observe” the surgery taking place, and will trigger an alarm and urge the surgeon to stop if the ongoing procedure bears similarity to the surgeries in the “bad” section of the system’s database.

Concurrently, if the procedure compares favorably to the cases in the “good” section, specifically the top 5 percent of the best scenarios, M.A.I.L. will indicate to the surgeon that it is safe to continue.

A spokesperson for 365mc praised the technology, pointing out that “[the system] has made liposuction surgeries safer and more effective than before as surgeon conducting the procedure will operate according to the most optimal ‘stroke’ motions rather than relying on intuitive touch.”

The spokesperson added that opportunities to use M.A.I.L. will only grow going forward.
